Water Base polyurethane vs Oil Base polyurethane

Water-based polyurethane and oil-based polyurethane are two popular types of finishes used to protect and enhance the appearance of hardwood floors. Here are some differences between the two:

  1. Drying Time: Water-based polyurethane dries much faster than oil-based polyurethane, typically within a few hours. Oil-based polyurethane, on the other hand, can take up to 24 hours to dry. At least 8 hours drying time.

  2. Appearance: Water-based polyurethane dries clear and does not yellow over time, which can be beneficial if you want to maintain the natural color of your hardwood floors. Oil-based polyurethane has a more amber or yellowish hue, which can darken over time.

  3. VOC Content: Water-based polyurethane has a lower VOC (volatile organic compound) content than oil-based polyurethane, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

  4. Durability: While both types of polyurethane are durable, oil-based polyurethane tends to be more resistant to wear and tear and can withstand heavy foot traffic and other types of wear better than water-based polyurethane.

  5. Odor: Oil-based polyurethane has a strong odor, which can be unpleasant and require adequate ventilation during application. Water-based polyurethane has a much milder odor and is generally considered more pleasant to work with.

In summary, water-based polyurethane is a faster-drying, environmentally friendly option that maintains the natural color of your hardwood floors, while oil-based polyurethane is more durable and provides a warm, amber finish that can darken over time. Ultimately, the choice between the two types of polyurethane will depend on your personal preference, the type of hardwood floors you have, and the level of durability and appearance you desire.
